Hönttämäki School
Hönttämäki school is situated eight kilometers from the centre of Oulu, Finland. The school was founded in 1983 and there are 240 pupils (7–12 years old) in 10 classes (grade 1.–6.).
The school’s values are based on sustainability and that is why we emphasize education for sustainable development (ESD) and strengthening the positive relationship between nature and child. In accordance with these principles we will teach pupils to take care of themselves, others and environment.
We want to teach children good manners and sense of responsibility. In our teaching we emphasize active and independent acquiring of knowledge and pupils’ participation. When pupils leave our school after six school years, we hope they have:
To achieve these goals we make a sustainable development action plan for each school year. The action plan consists of ecological, economical as well as social and cultural aspects of sustainability. The school’s Green flag program involves all pupils and whole staff to promote sustainable development. Hönttämäki School is awarded with both national Sustainable development certificate for schools and international Green flag certificate.
