De Wereldreiziger
Our school, De Wereldreiziger (The World Traveller), is right in the beating heart of the city center of the large port town of Antwerp. It is also located near by the major train station. The proximity of both has an effect on the population of our school. Children from all over the world find their way to our school. For these non-native speaking newcomers, De Wereldreiziger is the landing wharf in their port of arrival. That’s why our school developed into a knowledge expertise centre on educating newcomers.
Due to the many armed conflicts in the world the number of these newcomers has increased. This year we have 52 pupils escaping war and poverty.
This has a major effect on our manor of teaching. That's why De Wereldreizger aims to be an innovative & inspiring learning environment. Teachers & staff members get all they can out of the students without allowing the process to be slowed down by the students’ prior knowledge, school career or native language. The school team prepares students for secondary education via high expectations, customised guidance, following-up their learning progress meticulously and team teaching.
Our school strives to be a living environment in addition to a learning environment. Therefore, we give our students those learning opportunities, insights and skills that develop them into world citizens.
A child’s first language helps the child value his or her culture and heritage, which contributes to a positive self-concept.
Children also need uninterrupted intellectual development. When those who are not yet fluent in Dutch switch to using only Dutch, they are functioning at an intellectual level below their age. Interrupting intellectual development in this manner is likely to result in academic failure. That’s why children can speak their own language whenever it’s useful and/or necessary. Currently, 66 different languages are spoken.
De Wereldreiziger has a kindergarten with 110 pupils and a primary school with 260 pupils. Our team exists of 5 assistants and 22 teachers. On top of this we also have more than 60 nationalities and a lot of cultures. Playfully the children discover the differences and similarities of the wealth of cultures present at school. They therefore understand the importance of respect, playing and working together. We organize a lot of activities around this theme.
Due to its total policy approach, De Wereldreiziger was the first primary school to obtain the European ESF quality label in January 2012.
Since nine years we are part of a bigger Flemish organization, called MOS. 8 years ago we achieved the first logo by organizing a project week for all the children, themed 'waste and nature'. Two years later we achieved the second logo. Every grade worked the whole year around one theme: water, waste, nature, mobility, energy. Two years ago we achieved logo 3.
Now we want to strengthen cooperation with organisitions in the neighbourhood and parents by anchoring all insights and actions. In 2018 we want to achieve ‘The Green Flag’. This international project is a good base for it.
